Macro Weekend

Macro Weekend

I bought my macro lens a few months back but never experimented much with it except the odd food shot. Saw this lovely bunch of flowers on the spring onions I bought and thought they made a pretty subject. I need to learn how to work this lens better.

  1. Hey Nags, let me know if you use it more and how useful it is. I just bought a Nikon DSLR and I am debating if I need a macro lens or not. I currently only have the kit lens.

    1. i've been using it a lot for food pics and i do see the advantage over the 50mm prime lens that i was using previously (and still do sometimes). but, this is an expensive lens and i concentrated on "want" more than "need"! :)

    3. Hehe, I am definitely a 'want' over a 'need' person too. I had a look at it in the store when buying my 5100, and its gorgeous and the shots are amazingly crisp. Except it costs about 400 quid, and that's almost like half the cost of the damn camera in the first place. Plus I probably won't use it for anything other than food pics, so feels like a waste, so to say.

Well, at least now I know what to put on my birthday list... along with the wide angle, telephoto and every other lens ever made ;)

  2. What's the primary advantage of the macro over the prime?

    1. you can get much closer to your subject with a macro lens. for the above shot, i was some 2mm (or thereabouts) from the subject. also, macro helps to exaggerate. the petals you see above were very tiny but the picture makes them look bigger and crisper. the 50mm is great for low light pictures, the macro can help with the same too but maybe not as much.

so yeah, if you want to get really close to a subject and capture fine details, this is your lens! i have always been interested in it and only refrained for as long as i did because of it's price.
